Old SIGGRAPH News
Here are a couple of old-by-now SIGGRAPH '98 nuggets:
I spoke with the Lightwave 3-D product manager at the NewTek booth regarding a possible Linux port of Lightwave. The initial answer was "no" but there was some possibility of getting the standalone renderer ported. Of course, I haven't heard back from him about that since. He also said, "You know Digital Domain used Lightwave on 'Titanic' and that they used Linux, right?" Whatever that means...
Someone who works for a very large media production house said that they're using a well-known 3-D app running under Linux. "If you know anything about 3-D, you've heard of them." He couldn't say, but rumours abounded to the effects of Maya or Softimage. (Nobody thought about Houdini, though.)

Now I've done it...
I just sent a new submission to slashdot regarding the opening of this site. I'll be keeping my eyes open for incoming /. effects if it actually gets posted. This poor little box...

The polls are now open!
As of right now all the questions are strictly editor-controlled, but I'm considering ways to open them up so anyone can submit a new poll. I'm not entirely sure that this is a desirable thing, or that anyone would even use it. (So, hey, why don't I put up a poll asking about it! :)

3dlinux.org goes online
There's still a lot of stuff that needs work, and a lot of things that I need to completely implement, but I think for the most part, the site is functional.
The choice of domain name may not be the most ideal, because, while I want to focus primarily on Linux and 3-D apps, any 3-D information is welcome, as well as any graphics information in general, whether it's for Linux or not. (i.e., Maya or The GIMP are certainly valid topics for this site.)

Moonlight Creator
Moonlight Creator is a GPL'd modeling, rendering and animation suite that has a similar appearance to Softimage. It looks like it's still in its infancy, but if the rest of the development continues with the same quality already expressed, this will be a fantastic package!

GIG
GIG's 3DGO software is available for Linux, although you apparently can no longer download the demo from their FTP site. Still, this is one of the few "high-end" 3-D packages that has publically ported to Linux.
