It's actually trivial: mailmain includes a Usenet gateway feature out
of the box. So you set up a parallel newsgroup for each list, point
mailman at it, and configure a web script interface to Usenet. This
was the most subtle part, because most web-based usenet readers are
either awful or bloated or both. The one I use is "newsportal"; it's
just a few little php3 scripts. Works like a charm, and it was easy
to blend into my website's decor. There may be other choices out
there, although last time I looked many were very overcomplicated.
What I never figured out was why people persist in making all these
complicated sql-backed web-only forums from scratch, when Usenet
provides a robust, scalable, and even trivially mirrorable backend for
discussion forums already. I guess people just like to write from
scratch...
