[linux] Microsoft vs Linux
Salut,
Bill.

Windows vs. Linux Written by Paul Schmidt, Photodex CEO
Is the industry really in a race to see whether Linux can displace
Windows? I think so. But why?
I don't think it has anything to do with software, operating systems or
technology. I think it has to do more with human integrity and pride
than anything else. Microsoft has taken extreme advantage of their
market dominance in subversive ways, and people want revenge. Microsoft
advocates are rare, and these days, it's difficult to find even one.
So what did Microsoft do that was so horrible?
It's a commonly held notion that Microsoft was less than truthful on
many occasions, and seldom to the benefit of their users. Some believe
Microsoft's products have become too bloated, buggy, and expensive.
We've been told that support for Microsoft products leaves something to
be desired.
Can Microsoft overcome these issues? I don't think so. They've lost the
public trust so many times, I don't think anyone is going to give them
the benefit of the doubt. Trust is something that is difficult to gain,
but easy to lose.
So why is it so important that Linux competes with Windows? People
deserve more than what they're getting. The only way to compete with
Microsoft is to do something they can't. This means developers must
create software that works all the time, every time. That's what Linux
is all about, and that's why I think Linux is going to give Microsoft a
headache.

On y trouve aussi une mise en garde contre Unisys et ses exigences
de royalties sur LZW et GIF. Mais cela, c'est une autre histoire...
