March 17, 1999 -- Hewlett-Packard Co. today expanded its commitment to Linux by
announcing that it has optimized its line of Kayak PC Workstations for the
open-source operating system.

The Kayak systems already run on Windows NT, but HP anticipates increasing
demand from users for Linux in the future, said Christina White of HP's
public relations firm Copithorne & Bellows. "It's a natural evolution for (HP),"
she said. HP has collaborated with the European Laboratory for Particle
Physics (CERN) for more than a year to study the performance and reliability of
HP Kayak PC workstations running Linux, HP said in a statement. For CERN's NA49
experiment, up to 30 dual-CPU workstations in a cluster are used to simulate and
study the conditions of the very early universe. Operating around the clock, the
systems are processing more than 30 terabytes of physics data required by the
experiment. So far, not a single hardware or Linux-related failure has been
detected, according to HP.

HP jumped on the Linux bandwagon this year with a slew of announcements,
including that its servers will run Linux, that it will develop a Linux-based
messaging system based on OpenView, and that it will add Linux APIs (application
programming interfaces) to the HP-UX operating system. HP also has announced
that it plans to offer integration services and support to Linux users through a
deal with Red Hat Software Inc., that its Web JetAdmin 5.1 system management
software will run on Red Hat Linux, Versions 5 and later, and that it will
port Linux to platforms based on the IA-64 architecture, Intel Corp.'s 64-bit
chip design, when it comes out.
