[linux-team] Portable computers
Dear Linux-Team Friends. As some of you know, my name is Carlos
Betancourt and I'm a Venezuelan Linux User/Evangelist. I went to Liege
last summer and I joined one of your copy parties. It was an
unforgetable experience; there I met Manu, Alex, Rafaelle, Bruno. Well,
I met bruno as soon as I arrived to liege and he was a great host.
Thanks for your help there, Bruno.
The reason I write you back is to explain an Idea I have. One month ago
I bought my Laptop Computer at www.bsicomputer.com. It's the model
NP6505T . It's a hell of a good machine, already running linux, of
course! I had to travel to the USA in order to buy it because import
taxes in my country are too high. I have an aunt there, so I just flew
to Florida, ordered the computer by phone to california (where BSI's
headquarters are), and received it after three days, delivered by FedEx.
It's been quite a good deal, because prices here in Venezuela for
Laptops are to high to reach. I saw the same in Belgium: Laptop are too
expensive. In the USA they are quite affordable.
I bought a K6-2 AMD processor, 64MB RAM, 4.0GB HD, 4MB Video, 14.1'' LCD
Panel (1024x768), you can replace your floppy for a LS-120 (Yeah!) or a
ZIP drive (floppy/Ls120/ZIP are internal!), hot swapable, CD-rom 24x
which you can replace for a 2x DVD drive. It has a 110v/220v autoswith,
so you can so America/Europe with no worries. It also have TV out port
(NTSC/NTSC Japanese/PAL; AV composite out or S-Video out port : In short
= compatible with european standards), simultaneous LCD/TV, LCD/SVGA,
TV/SVGA display (you can plug a regular monitor), sound card which linux
reconizes!!! (Yeah, I have sound on Linux!), IR port, and the carriying
case is free!...well, features go on and on.
I recommend you to visit this company's page to know more about this
Laptop. I'm writting a review on how to install linux on it. The
document that convinced me on buying this laptop was
http://www.ischo.com/notebook/ . It's part of the "Linux On Laptop"
Database http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop
As I've found out, this Laptop is bundled with Toshiba components (my
linux says so), so I think is a very reliable computer. You can find
more info about this company and it's laptos at
http://www.lyngemark.com/jungle/
Yesterday I sold my computer to a musician here in Venezuela. He is
delighted with this computer and gave me the money inmediatly
(litterally : I did show him the laptop at 11am and we went to the bank
at 4pm :). So, tomorrow I'll fly again to the USA in order to buy a new
model for me. I'll buy another computer from the same company.
So, here is my idea: If one of you wants one of those laptops I can buy
them and GO to Liege to deliver the laptop by myself. You will pay me on
delivery. Visit the company's web site, find out prices and add 25% to
the total, write an e-mail and....that's it! We'll have a deal. You
won't have to pay taxes for this computer so it WILL be cheaper than
anything you buy in Europe.
I will take them out of the box and carry them with me as mine, so I
won't have problems at the airport. I will give you everything else in
it's box, unpacked. I will never turn on the laptop.
When I bought my laptop this company only offered M$-Winbugs
preinstalle. So I wrote them an e-mail explaining the adventage of
preintalling Linux too. So now they do so!!! Yeah!! I'm trully happy for
it. If you want to order it with linux bundled just let me know.
Send me all your data, so the company will issue you an ownership
certificate. Yes, IT WILL be on your name. Very nice.
Well, I have thousands more words but I have to take a bus to another
city in order to take my plane to Florida.
While being in Florida you can reach me via phone or e-mail:
Phone Number: 1-352-335.64.58, Gainesville, Fl.
e-mail: cbetan@unet.ve or dcu@gnv.ifas.ufl.edu
Please, write back AS SOON AS possible. I won't go there for turism, I
will go just for one week. If two or three of you (minimum) orders me a
computer I will buy a ticket to Belgium in Florida.
BTW, my girlfriend is Belgium and she lives in Liege. You can contact me
there when I get to Belgium. She HAS NOTHING to do with this idea, so
please don't phone her to ask questions about the computer. Bruno
already knows her. Her number is 342.74.18 (Liege)
I will order my computer on MONDAY morning, so write back before or
during monday morning.
REMEMBER: I WILL GO TO LIEGE ONLY IF TWO OF YOU (MINIMUM) IS BUYING A
COMPUTER. MAYBE THREE BUT I'M NOT SURE. I'LL TAKE THE FIRST TWO WHO
CONTACT ME.
It's a pitty that I didn't do it for tomorrow's COPY PARTY, but I didn't
have the money to do it.
If you want we could have a mini-copy-party just to play with these new
babies.
Well, I have to go. Time is running!!
A BIG HUG TO ALL YOU GUYS! I WISH TO SEE YOU ALL SOON!!
Long LIFE to PENGUINS!!!
Carlos Betancourt
