Linux community plans Win2K spoiler
12:39 Monday 10 January 2000
By NATHAN COCHRANE LINUX users worldwide plan to gatecrash Microsoft's 17
February release of its most eagerly anticipated product in five years,
Windows 2000.
The founder of last year's Linux Demo Day, Intel employee Deepak Saxena,
plans to use the publicity surrounding Windows' release to generate
interest in the alternative operating system, Linux. Users will be
encouraged to run presentations in local libraries, schools and at their
workplaces on and around the day.
With the support of corporate sponsors including Red Hat and Linux Mall,
Saxena said the grass-roots evangelism effort to counter the Microsoft
hype is not borne of hatred of the Seattle company. Instead he wants to
spread the word that an alternative exists.
"I propose that the Linux community use this date to educate more people
on why they should consider Linux as an alternative for use at their
businesses,'' Saxena wrote to the linuxdemo-announce listgroup.
"Perhaps just spend an hour with that co-worker of yours who is always
poking fun at Linux and show him the facts.
"Whatever you do just get the word out: There is an alternative.''
