Recommendation V.42 bis describes a data compression procedure for use 
with V-Series DCEs.

The principal characteristics of the data compression procedure are:

	a) a compression procedure based on an algorithm which 
	   encodes strings of characters received from data terminal 
	   equipment (DTE)

	b) a decoding procedure which recovers the strings of 
	   characters from received codewords;

	c) an automatic transparent mode of operation when 
	   uncompressible data is detected.
