Recommendation G.709 describes the formats for multiplexing and 
mapping elements into the synchronous transport module STM-N at the 
network-node interface.

It describes the basic multiplexing structure, the multiplexing 
method, the pointers (administrative pointer, tributary units pointers 
TU-1, TU-2 and TU-3), the path overhead, and the mapping of 
tributaries into virtual containess.
